General American Skier Discussions / Rooster tail where wakes meet
« Last post by 1sullivan on May 31, 2021, 10:37:42 AM »
On my 1993 American Skier Advance I’ve been running into a 2-3 foot tall rooster tail of water that comes up where the wake converges. When I ski it’s on the 22-28 foot off range on the rope. Has anyone ever run into this as well? Is there a fix to flatten it out?

I would like to go back and add photos to old post that were deleted, but have not yet found the correct key strokes. Any one else in the same boat? The fix?

Pretty quiet here... but I did get a note from RonT with some helpful info. The major hurdles seem to be cleared now, with gross alignment done and the floor notched for the rwp. I’ll probably make subsequent updates over on the fb page (though it pains me) as that seems to get a little more foot traffic.

I apologize for the image size, not sure how to correct (I’m on my phone and using Imgur to host). Also don’t see an edit feature...

454 pump location for reference (forward and lower than crank pulley):

A few pics. Engine is currently cranked up on the mounts to keep from hitting the hull. Rwp is removed because it would have hit the floor. Pic at bottom shows a pic including the pump for reference. We are reusing the 10-17 for now to simplify shaft length and coupler size.

General American Skier Discussions / 454 Advance

New member here, working on reviving a ‘87 Advance left for dead. Bought the boat engine-less (originally had a PCM 350) and figured that a spare PCM 454 might drop in without too much fanfare. I saw the quote below from Ron in this thread.

We did MFG. show ski specific boats based on our regular production models, we beefed up the pylon mount and installed a taller pylon, some Advance were built with 454's as well.

Curious if anyone has or has seen such a beast, or if anyone involved with their design or build could enlighten me on a few things. The initial install hit a small snag when the quick drain fitting on the bottom of the pan hit the hull... will remove it but boy, it’ll still be tight if I can get the engine low enough to align it. It appears that the floor and motorbox may need to be notched for the rwp as well... maybe indmars were used originally but the crank mounted pump would’ve been tight on the box (or pylon) too.  Thirdly, the motorbox looks like it’ll need to be raised an inch or so, it fits LxW (other than the rwp) but is sitting up on the exhaust manifolds. Curious what mods (if any) were required to fit the big block in the boat... might shorten our learning curve a little. Thanks!

General Inboard Ski Boat Discussions / Wake Challenger 2280XC
« Last post by Mason on November 19, 2020, 10:03:13 AM »
I sold my 1991 American Skier Volante a few years ago and am looking for another boat. My wife and I have been wakesurfing (don’t judge me) for a few years and would enjoy something we could both ski & surf behind.  Our modest budget is around $10K because we will not finance a toy.

I keep looking at a 1997 a Wake Challenger online. I know it was a short lived Bayliner/US Marine brand but I like the look of the boat. Can anyone provide and insight on the brand or advice on the quality. I have searched for info online but due to the low production numbers I haven’t found much.

Thanks for replying Ron I will check those things. I did replace the coil 6 or 8 months ago, but I will check to see if it is getting Hot.

Here are a couple things to check given your observations:
1) Ign. module could be doing this, check for spark at one of the plugs when it stops running
2) Ign coil could be going out (overheating)
3) Fuel starvation from a blocked fuel vent (crack the fuel fill when she quits & listen for a vacuum sound or run with it cracked for a few minutes)
4) angled base on carb is normal
5) New carb choke way out of adjustment (staying closed)

Tim Miller here again, I was wondering if the electronic ignition module could be going bad which in turn is getting hot which could be making the motor shut off at the 4 minute mark. I had bought a new marine 4 barrel Holley carburetor a couple months ago, and when I installed it the boat ran well, however the last few times I started it the boat will only run for a short time before shutting off. I know that the carburetor didn't have an angled mounting plate on before, so I'm not thinking that that could be the issue. Because the carb. does sit at a pretty good angle. Please help me with any insight that you may have. Tim in Tampa
